Regulation of bioinputs is approved in the Senate and goes to sanction

This Tuesday (3), the Senate approved the legal framework (project 658/2021) for the production, use and commercialization of bioinputs in agriculture. The text, authored by deputy Zé Vitor (PL-MG), had passed through the Chamber of Deputies last week and will now be sanctioned by President Lula.Regulation of bioinputs is approved in the Senate and goes to sanction

Senator Jaques Wagner (PT-BA), rapporteur of the matter and who had presented a similar project, defended its approval in the plenary. He stated that the legislation will guarantee Brazil important progress for agricultural producers.

“Brazil, one of the largest agricultural producers in the world, has extraordinary potential to lead the production of bioinputs.” He highlights that these products are biological substances, such as microorganisms, biofertilizers, biological control agents and plant extracts, which become more environmentally sustainable alternatives to traditional agricultural chemical inputs, such as pesticides and fertilizers.

Healthier foods

Another advantage, as the senator explained, is that bioinputs contribute to the preservation of biodiversity and the regeneration of soil health. He pointed out that Brazilian bioinput technology is recognized abroad. “It is essential for agriculture and also for livestock farming. This will enable healthier food to be produced and less harmful to the land and the environment.” The parliamentarian understands that the legal framework was built from a debate with entities, industrial sectors, social movements and academia.

Furthermore, according to Jaques Wagner’s arguments, the development of this sector in Brazil strengthens the country’s position in the global agricultural market and offers an opportunity to attract investment from companies and generate quality jobs.

“Innovation plays a central role in this context. For Brazil to position itself as a global leader in bioinputs, it is essential that the government and the private sector invest in research and development.” Another consideration is that the agrochemicals market, on the other hand, is dominated by international conglomerates.

Sustainable

Senator Tereza Cristina (PP-MS) also spoke in support of the project, which would be important both for those who practice family farming and for the largest producers for a sustainable activity. “If we had not acted quickly, rural producers, including those producing organic products, who use bio-inputs produced on their properties, would have remained illegal.”

The Minister of Agriculture, Carlos Fávaro, stated that the approval of the agenda in the Senate is an achievement for rural producers. “Brazil has just taken another big step in the efficiency and quality of Brazilian products. By approving this matter, we avoid weakening organic products and can continue producing with quality and efficiency.”
