Registrations of electric and hybrid vehicles grew by 107%

In 2021, they enrolled in Latin America 118,145 hybrid and electric vehicles, which represents an increase of 107.1% compared to 2020 when 57,078 units were registered. The fastest growing segment was plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) and non-plug-in hybrids (HEVs) at 110.1%, while all-electric vehicles (BEVs) grew 57.3%.

According to calculations of let’s go Based on data provided by vehicle dealer associations in each country, of the total, 6,011 units were fully electric vehicles (BEVs), 7,887 plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) and 104,293 hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs).

By countries, where more electric and hybrid vehicles were registered were Mexico with 44,783 units, Brazil with 34,990 units and Colombia with 17,702 units.

Although in Colombia all the electric vehicle segments had excellent growth in 2021, the general figure was affected by the lack of delivery of 400 electric buses of the 1,002 electric buses pending the tender for Bogota. By 2022, it is expected that with pending deliveries to TransMilenium the country consolidates its leadership in Latin America in fully electric vehicles for the fifth year.

For Oliverio Enrique García, president of Andemos, “The accelerated increase in hybrid vehicles in Latin America is a sign that this technology is the appropriate strategy in the aspirations of achieving a zero-emission transport sector, since it is more likely that a consumer of a hybrid vehicle will upgrade to an electric vehicle in his next purchase.”.

(See: Changes and dates to pay property and vehicle taxes in Bogotá).

Hybrid vehicles registered in Colombia totaled 16,406 units, registering in 2021, a growth of 250% compared to 2020. However, while in Mexico and Brazil more than 40 hybrid vehicles are registered for each electric vehicle, in Colombia this ratio is 4 times lower, so it is required to further promote the hybrid technologies in the country that mostly meet the highest emission levels.

It should be noted that, currently, the national emission standard for gasoline engines is below Euro 4 and from 2023 it will go to Euro 4. However, thanks to the Public politics of incentives that hybrid vehicles receive both nationally and in Bogotá, 42% of hybrid vehicles registered in 2021 met the emission standard Euro 6, the highest emission standard of the European standard and in the first two months of 2022 the participation of Euro 6 hybrid vehicles increased to 56%.

For Garcia, “The supply of Euro 6 hybrid engines on the market is great news for the country’s energy transition program, since they are more efficient technologies in terms of fossil fuel consumption and polluting emissions, which means greater savings in gasoline costs for Colombians and for the state in the fuel price stabilization fund and in public spending generated by the reduction of polluting emissions, for which we call on the national government to permanently release the restriction of the annual quotas that Hybrid vehicles are subject”.
