The MEC, on its website, reports that “on January 1, 2023, the Accountability Law approved by Parliament (Law No. 20,075) entered into force, which contains three articles incorporated at the proposal of this Ministry ( 271 to 273), which introduce changes in the birth registration and civil marriage procedures.
Until last year, newborns had to be registered at the place where they were born, within a period of ten days. From the first of January, births can also be registered at the Civil Registry Office corresponding to the place of domicile of the mother, according to the convenience of the parents.
The second change has to do with the civil marriage process. Until 2022, people had to marry in the place of residence of one of the future spouses. As of 2023, civil marriages can take place anywhere in the country, regardless of where the couple lives.
These measures are in addition to those adopted in 2021, which for the first time incorporated the Civil Registry services of the entire interior into a national computer system, accessible in real time.
