Regimes of Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua are out of the X Summit of the Americas

En junio pasado, Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores (MIREX) de República Dominicana presentó el tema del evento: "La seguridad humana en sus diversas dimensiones"

The Foreign Ministry of the Dominican Republic, a country that will host the event, announced on Tuesday that it will not extend invitations to Havana, Caracas or Managua.

Miami, United States. – The Foreign Ministry of the Dominican Republic announced on Tuesday that the governments of Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela will not be invited to the X Summit of the Americas to guarantee the success of the event and prioritize the participation of the greatest possible number of countries.

The announcement appears in An official statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Caribbean country, dated in Santo Domingo on Tuesday.

The Dominican government said that the summit of the Americas “became closely coordinated by the Organization of American States (OAS), through its Secretariat of Summits” and that “this framework establishes specific limitations in terms of participation.”

Consequently, “the non -invitation to Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela – País who, for various reasons, have decided not to be part of the OAS and that did not participate in the last edition of the summit of the Americas – constitutes the decision that, given the hemispheric circumstances, favors the greatest call and ensures the development of the forum,” the text says.

The Dominican Foreign Ministry also recalls that the three countries did attend other multilateral events held in Quequeyanan lands, such as the Ibero -American Summit in Santo Domingo (2023) and the Summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) in Bávaro (2017), but underlines that the pro tempore presidency of the summit “must be exercised from [una] perspective [multilateral] and depending on the interest of the majority of states that integrate the mechanism ”.

The statement also distinguishes the nature of bilateral links with each of the three countries. On Cuba, he affirms: “Relationships are historical, solid and excellent. Bilateral exchanges in various areas have never been interrupted and have been mutually beneficial. Political differences have always been managed with reciprocal respect.”

Regarding Nicaragua, it indicates: “Relationships are cordial. We share spaces in forums such as the SICA, the CELAC, the UN and the Segib, in addition to maintaining a balanced bilateral trade.”

As for Venezuela, he points out: “Country with which they unite deep historical ties. However, the Dominican government has not recognized the legitimacy of the last two presidential elections held there, while the Venezuelan authorities have suspended diplomatic relations.”

By way of closing, the Foreign Ministry argues that it adopted “the decision that considers more favorable,” and adds: “The Government estimates preferable to create the conditions that ensure the widest political dialogue, with the highest level of hemispheric representativeness.”
