Regime will release political prisoner Eladio Real Suárez, after 29 years in prison

MADRID, Spain.- The Cuban political prisoner Eladio Real Suárez, who has been in prison since 1994 for his frontal fight for the freedom of Cuba, will be released this Thursday.

The authorities have informed the family that Real Suárez, 54, will be able to leave the Agüica prison in Matanzas this Thursday starting at 9:00 a.m., the Spanish agency reported. EFE.

As Graciela Suárez Díaz, mother of the opponent, explained, the Cuban regime has urged him to appear at an Migration office after he is released to regularize his situation in the country.

However, indicated Suárez Díaz, his desire is to emigrate to the United States as soon as possible. His daughter and his brother reside in the northern country.

Eladio Real Suárez was sentenced at the age of 26 to 30 years in prison, of which he has served 28, after disembarking in Cuba in 1994 in an anti-government armed expedition from the United States.

Initially he had been sentenced to death, but in 2010 the sentence was commuted to 30 years by the Supreme Court of Cuba, thanks to strong international pressure.

After learning of his possible release, the Assembly of the Cuban Resistance (ARC), based in Miami, recalled that during his years in prison “Humberto was the victim of countless mistreatment and torture in prisons, such as cruel mock firing squads during the more than ten years.”

In 2020 Real Suarez it was recognized with the “Pedro Luis Boitel Freedom Award”, which is awarded annually by the Cuban Democratic Directorate (DDC) in recognition “of the exceptional work and leadership of the resistance within Cuba that promotes a change towards democracy” on the Island.

For this day, pending the release of Suárez, La Casa del Preso and the organization Exilio Unido Ya have called a vigil at the headquarters of the monument to Brigade 2506, located in Miami.
