Regime suspends Havana Carnival and announces more blackouts

Carnaval; Carnaval de La Habana;

MIAMI, United States. — The Cuban authorities suspended the traditional Carnival of Havana, which takes place every year in the capital during the month of August, due to the electrical energy crisis that the Island is going through.

According to the provincial newspaper Grandstandthe announcement was made by the governor of Havana, Reinaldo García Zapata, who confirmed that it will not be possible to hold the event this year.

“It was conceived to hold the Carnival of Havana on the weekends of August 19 to 21 and from 26 to 29, but, taking into account the analysis we have carried out, it will not be possible to carry out the Carnival under these conditions,” the official reported. during a meeting in the capital.

García Zapata pointed out that the failures suffered by the different thermoelectric plants on the island have ruined the planning of the Carnival, which would take place once the electro-energy situation in the country stabilizes.

The governor also assured that the lack of fuel and the problems that this generates for public transportation do not make it feasible for the Havana Carnival to take place.

Instead of the Carnival, popular festivals will be held on the Malecón between August 26 and 28, and in some municipalities they will be held on the 19 and 21 of the same month.

The official also warned that, in order to reduce the national energy demand, blackouts of four hours a day will be scheduled in the capital.

The variant to be applied is to turn off two blocks every day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., which would guarantee that each circuit would be affected every three days for four hours, freeing 100 megawatts a day of energy consumption in the country.

The electricity cuts in Havana will begin during the coming month of August.
