MIAMI, United States. — Authorities from the province of Pinar del Río promised to build 3,800 homes per year in the next five years, reported today the Guerrilla Newspaper.
The figure came to light at a press conference offered by a group of specialists and executives from the Provincial Assembly of People’s Power, the Provincial Housing Directorate (DPV) and the Commerce Business Group, who “offered details and perspectives on this social edge that hurts so much today at the heart of each neighborhood”.
Pinar del Río is one of the Cuban provinces with the greatest shortages of housing funds. The ruling party justifies this situation with the successive weather events that have occurred in the last 15 years, the last of which was the powerful hurricane ianwhich affected that territory in October 2022.
According to the state media, the plan for 3,800 homes per year must be implemented by the province “at the request of the country’s highest authorities.”
“For the recovery of this sector, the province, at the request of the country’s highest authorities, must conclude and respond to all proposals and needs within a period of five years, which would be equivalent to more than 3,800 annual homes on average during the next five years,” says the Guerrilla Newspaper.
In statements collected by that press body, Andrés Martín Carmona, provincial director of Housing, explained that there are currently 102,229 damaged houses in the territory, of which 12,805 are considered total collapses and 9,950 partial collapses.
The official indicated that total roof collapses are estimated at just over 19,260 —of which more than 1,650 have been restructured, while there are partial roof collapses in 47,582 homes.
The Housing authorities in Pinar del Río highlighted that, “in one way or another, all the points of sale in the territory sell resources to the victims for the reconstruction of the properties, something that is worth recognizing, because perhaps some do not have all the conditions for it.”
