Regime prevents mothers of 11J prisoners from leaving the country

Cuba, Presos políticos, Régimen cubano

MIAMI, United States. — The Cuban regime prevented two mothers of political prisoners from traveling to Europe this Thursday, where they were scheduled to meet with members of the European Parliament, as well as representatives of institutions on that continent and the United Nations.

They are Liset Fonseca, mother of Roberto Pérez Fonseca and Marta Perdomo, mother of Jorge and Nadir Martín Perdomo, all protesters of july 11, 2021 (J11).

The fact was denounced on social networks by the Cuban Observatory of Human Rights (OCDH), a non-governmental organization based in Madrid, Spain.

“The Cuban regime has just prevented Liset Fonseca, mother of Roberto Pérez Fonseca, and Marta Perdomo, mother of Jorge and Nadir Martín Perdomo, from boarding the Iberia flight that leaves Havana today at 6:45 pm. They planned to meet with European and UN institutions,” the NGO said on Twitter.

Yaxys Cires, Director of Strategy for the OCDH, assured CubaNet that the mothers had been invited by that organization and that they had already arranged an agenda with meetings with MEPs, European officials in Madrid, Brussels and Geneva, in the latter city, they would meet with officials from the UN Human Rights Council.

“We are facing arbitrariness, a violation of article 13 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It is not enough for the Cuban regime to unfairly imprison the children of these mothers, but it also prevents them from going out to denounce these abuses,” Cires told this newspaper.

For the director of Strategy of the OCDH, the ban on leaving Liset and Marta is another sign of the island’s regime’s disregard for the international institutions that were going to receive the mothers.

The OCDH highlighted that the authorities not only prevented them from flying: “they also allowed them to obtain their boarding pass in order to nullify the possibility of a flight change or ticket refund.
