MIAMI, United States. — The Cuban musician Abel González Lescay was sentenced to five years of “limitation of freedom” for his participation in the demonstrations of July 11, 2021 in Havana, the young man reported this Wednesday on social networks.
“My sentence is out. Five years of limitation of freedom. He is at home, working or studying. I congratulate myself. Thank you all very much for the great help from him, ”Lescay wrote on his profile. Facebook.
Initially, the young man had been sentenced to six years in prison for his participation in the 11J protests in the municipality of Bejucal, Mayabeque province. However, a review of the case ended up softening the sentence.
González Lescay was prosecuted for the alleged crimes of public disorder and aggravated contempt. In an interview given to CubaNet Last May, the young man had described the previous sentence against him as “lack of respect”.
“My parents have understood the situation and they support me a lot, my family has very good energy. I don’t believe the six-year sentence, and what he gave me was laughter when I read it. That is a lack of respect and a very bad job, I do not know how they are going to have the conscience to put me in prison for those years for offending a police officer, that what would take the most is a fine.
On June 8, the musician was expelled from the Higher Institute of Art (ISA), where he was studying music. The fact was spread by the artist himself on social networks.
“I was discharged from ISA. I struck out some subjects, they couldn’t give me the repetition. I don’t lose much more than a hostel. I continue my preparation as a composer with my beloved teacher Juan Piñera,” wrote the 11J protester.
