Regime gives the green light to 93 new MSMEs, and more than 5,000 go in the last year

MIAMI, United States. — The Ministry of Economy and Planning (MEP) today approved 93 requests for the creation of private micro, small and medium enterprisess (MSMEs), as it appears in a list released this Thursday by the state entity.

The new ventures cover various spheres of the economy ranging from gastronomy and services to computer programming activities or construction.

All the country’s provinces are represented in the new projects, with the exception of Cienfuegos and the Isla de la Juventud Special Municipality.

With the new 93 MSMEs, there are 5,258 economic actors approved since the process began in September 2021: 5,149 private MSMEs, 51 state MSMEs, and 58 non-agricultural cooperatives.

According to the MEP, 52% of these actors are reconversions of businesses that already existed and 48% correspond to new ventures.

The agency estimates that the new “economic actors” will generate 89,602 new jobs in the country.

The MEP itself indicates that 133 of the more than 5,000 enterprises approved in the last year are part of local development projects and 12 are located in the Science and Technology Park of Havana.

Although the approval of MSMEs on the island points to the creation of new productive forces, numerous Cuban economists have criticized the lack of conditions and the absence of an adequate legal framework that favors these ventures.

“The countries that have had the best results in defining their action frameworks for MSMEs are those that grant the greatest freedom to develop their functions and guarantee a rapid accumulation of capital that consolidates projects in the shortest possible time,” said the last July 12 the renowned economist Elijah Love.

The expert advanced that, in the context of Cuba, “the measures that the regime is thinking about for MSMEs are not going to give the desired results, and it is good to anticipate this issue to see if the government reacts in time and bets on freedom and not control.”
