Cuba, robos, celulares, ETECSA

MADRID, Spain.- Given the growing increase in theft of cell phones on the island, some with violence, official media have published instructions to act in cases of theft.

According to a recent article by cubadebate, The victims of these robberies can go to ETECSA which, in order to try to recover the phone, will register them on the Black List.

“The Black List is not included in the portfolio of services to be provided by the company, according to the approval of the Ministry of Communications, so it does not constitute a service to be marketed. However, as a telecommunications service operator we can, whenever conditions allow, make use of this tool to prevent the use of equipment reported stolen or lost in our network,” said Mayumis Vicente Pino, head of the Mass Marketing Group. of the Territorial Directorate of ETECSA in Ciego de Ávila.

As he explained, this procedure is relatively new, adding that in November 2022 it was reported that it was not mandatory to present evidence of the complaint to the National Revolutionary Police to report the loss of the telephone at the ETECSA offices; measure motivated by the increase in these robberies.

The owner also indicates that, after suffering the theft of the telephone, if the client is not near a commercial unit, he must make a telephone call to the customer service to request the blocking of his line and that the person who found his phone cannot make use of the balance it had at the time of the loss.

In addition, he advises keeping the IMEI of the phone, a 15-digit code pre-recorded in mobile phones, which works as an international identity code that each cell phone has and that distinguishes it in a unique way.

the article of cubadebate recognizes that in the informal market a low-end Smartphone can cost, at least, six or seven times the average monthly salary of a Cuban worker.

Among the most unfortunate cases of cell phone thefts on the island in recent months is that of the adolescent Darío Leyva Acosta. Leyva Acosta, 14, was murdered for this reason last November, in the town of Maniabón, belonging to the municipality of Puerto Padre, Las Tunas.
