In March 2024, the Provincial Court of Camagüey denied the appeal trial, so he had to serve his three-year sentence.
LIMA, Peru – The Cuban regime released this Saturday, December 6, Cuban activist Aniette González García, who was imprisoned for three years in the Kilo 5 prison in Camagüey for taking several photos dressed with the Cuban flag.
Magdiel Jorge Castro, Cuban activist, shared the news through X (formerly Twitter). “Aniette is free today, but the injustice to which she was subjected is not erased. She was arrested in March 2023 for ‘outrage,'” she denounced.
González was arrested on March 23, 2023, after posting photos on social media wrapped in the Cuban flag as part of the “The flag belongs to everyone” campaign, which supported the release of the artivist. Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara.
The day after its publication, González was detained by nine agents and transferred to the Crimes Against Security Unit of the State of Camagüey, where she was interrogated. Subsequently, was convicted to three years in prison for “outrage to national symbols.”
In March 2024, the Provincial Court of Camagüey denied the political prisoner her appeal trial, so she had to comply the sentence of 3 years.
Almost two months later, in May, the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) issued precautionary measures in favor of the Cuban activist.
The Cuban Observatory of Human Rights (OCDH), which requested these measures, stood out the seriousness of the situation and the urgency of acting to protect González’s fundamental rights.
The IACHR then requested the Government of Cuba to take immediate measures to ensure the protection of González’s rights to life, personal integrity and health, and to improve his detention conditions in accordance with international standards.
“Aniette’s detention is arbitrary as it goes against the right to free expression. Her conditions of imprisonment are putting her life at risk. We thank the IACHR for its concern about this case and we demand the Cuban regime for her immediate release,” concluded the OCDH.
