MIAMI, United States. – The Cuban regime denied the appeal filed in favor of Daniel Joel Cárdenas Díaz, a 11J protester from the Matanzas municipality of Cárdenas who was shot by members of the Special Brigades of the Ministry of the Interior (Black Berets) who raided his home, the July 13, 2021.
The news was confirmed by the wife of the political prisoner, Marbelis Vázquez.

“Since January 9, I filed the appeal. Until now we had not had an answer, but today the lawyer called me and told me that yesterday they had downloaded my husband’s papers. I asked him when the appeal trial would be and he told me with tremendous sorrow that they had told him that the appeal had been denied, that the same years that each of them had been asked to maintain, “said the woman .
For Vázquez, the last six months have been one of waiting “in vain”. “Now the sentence is final and I am truly disconcerted. The lawyer told me that in his 20-year career he had never heard anything like this, that he was even possibly going to request discharge because his work could not be done”.
“I do not coordinate: 15 years separated from my husband, my children will grow up without that father’s love, without a united family, incredible, all this they are doing is unfair,” he also assured.
Vázquez recalled that her husband had been “violently” arrested in his own home and in front of his minor children, at that time two years. “He was shot in the back of the head,” she also specified.
The moment of the arrest, which was recorded by Vázquez, went viral on social networks. “They shot him down. After having it on the floor they fell on him in pineapple. They mounted him as if he were a pig inside a truck, ”the woman lamented at the time.
In March of this year, the Cuban regime condemned Cárdenas Díaz was sentenced to 15 years in prison for the alleged crimes of sabotage and public disorder. The trial against him was held on December 8, 9 and 10, 2021 at the Matanzas Military Prosecutor’s Office.
The protester was tried along with another group of people accused of the alleged crimes of sabotage, public disorder, attack, robbery with force, robbery with violence and intimidation of people.
After his arrest, Cárdenas Díaz was interrogated in front of television cameras. Later, manipulated fragments of the “interview” were broadcast on the July 17, 2021 edition of the Cuban Television National Newscast with the aim of “denying” the family members’ claims.
However, Vázquez indicated that the official media had omitted a scene in which her husband raised his sweater and revealed the blows he received.
