The Police of the regime of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo took manu militari the building of the Permanent Commission on Human Rights (CPDH) on the morning of this January 19, 2023, thus consuming the “theft” of the assets of the non-governmental organization outlawed on April 20 of last year.
The directors of the organization, who are currently in exile, verified with residents of the property that in the morning “four police patrols with riot gear came to seize our building,” located in the Montoya neighborhood, in Managua.
Faced with this confiscation, the CPDH warned in a press release that “these repressive acts, neither the threats, nor the imprisonment of our official, Dr. Maria Oviedo Delgado; Our voice and our fight to defend the human rights of Nicaraguans have been silent, nor will they be silent, on the contrary, it commits us to remain firm in the national and international demand for truth, justice, reparation and non-repetition in favor of the victims and their relatives”.
The executive director of the CPDH, Marcos Carmona, regretted what happened in Managua and recalled that this building was acquired thanks to international cooperation. However, he emphasized that confiscations are part of the modus operandi of the Ortega-Murillo regime.
“We knew that this situation was going to happen sooner or later, since they took away our legal status last year we were clear that the building was going to be confiscated, so we should not be surprised by this action on the part of the dictatorship because it has been a practice, a custom, steal what belongs to others, steal and insult the rights of Nicaraguans,” said Carmona.
He also emphasized that despite the illegalization and confiscation of their assets in Managua, the CPDH will continue to defend the human rights of Nicaraguans.
The organization is currently operating from exile and has a regional office in Miami, USA. The service modality is face-to-face, for those who so wish, and virtual for those who are in Nicaragua or another country.
The virtual attention process includes an audiovisual interview with the victim or complainant so that they present their complaint. From there, the Commission begins a documentation and systematization process to identify the appropriate support mechanisms and strategies.
