MADRID, Spain.- The Military Court of the Cienfuegos region began on Monday, June 5, a trial against six participants in a popular protest during a long blackout on July 30 at the Covadonga Popular Council, municipality of Aguada de Pasajeros.
“The trial is in the central region of Cienfuegos Military, in Caonao, near the airport. The relatives did all go to Caonao, where the Court and the Military Prosecutor’s Office are located, within a military unit, ”he explained to Radio Television Martí Juan Alberto de la Nuez Ramírez, national coordinator of the Reflection and Reconciliation Citizen Movement; organization to which two of the people tried belong.
Accused of the alleged crimes of sedition and contempt are Pedro Caride Santana, Marcos González Castro, José Armando Castañeda Terrer and Dagoberto Escobar Sosa. While Gianny Betancourt Leiva and Seify Carmona Méndez are tried for sedition, contempt and sabotage.
Regarding the demonstration, Juan Alberto de la Nuez explained that the first day the authorities of the regime detained more than 60 people and in the following days the repression continued in the town; the total number of detainees reached almost 200.
The participants in the protest “unloaded their genius, their impotence, against a store in Freely Convertible Currency (MLC), but they did not steal any item, what they simply did was break the items, and also a large fence of more than six meters that said ‘Welcome to Covadonga’ with an image of Fidel Castro, which was completely destroyed”, explained the activist.
He also added that “there is no one who can say who entered the MLC store, who broke a glass, because there are no images and the crowd was huge.”
“It seems that the blame is going to fall on the people who they think are most disaffected with the system,” he said.
