Oscar Pérez-Oliva Fraga was appointed “by agreement of the Council of State” and proposed by the dictator Miguel Díaz-Canel.
LIMA, Peru – For the third time in less than two years, the Cuban regime promoted Oscar Pérez-Oliva Fraga, great-nephew of Fidel and Raúl Castro. This Friday, the official press on the Island revealed that the leader was promoted to deputy prime minister of the Republic.
A report from the state media Cubadebate points out that Pérez-Oliva Fraga, who until now served as Minister of Foreign Trade and Foreign investment (MINCEX) of Cuba, was appointed “by agreement of the Council of State” at the proposal of the dictator Miguel Díaz-Canel and “with the prior approval of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party.”
Oscar Pérez-Oliva Fraga is a 54-year-old electronic engineer who has risen through positions related to foreign investment until becoming the new deputy prime minister.
In May 2024, the grandson of Castroism was promoted to head of MINCEX after the departure of the late Ricardo Cabrisas, a role that he will maintain simultaneously with his newly obtained position.
Prior to that, Pérez-Oliva Fraga had been appointed vice minister only in January 2024 replacing the first vice minister of the organization, Ana Teresita González Fraga.
The ascension of Pérez-Oliva Fraga to vice minister was then related to a “process of renewal of positions in the Government structures.”
According to current official reports, the leader “has developed his career from the base within the Cuban business system. Among the positions he has held are general director of the Maquimport Company and director of Business Evaluation in the Mariel Special Development Zone.”
Pérez-Oliva Fraga is the son of the biologist Mirsa Fraga Castro, in turn one of the daughters of Ángela Castro, the eldest sister of the clan, who died in 2012 at the age of 88.
The new vice prime minister would also be the nephew of José Antonio Fraga Castro, president of Labiofam until 2014.
