“Reggaeton is not going to change the world, but it helps a little"

Ms Nina (Argentina, 1992) never thought of being a singer. He moved from Córdoba to Motril, changing province but also continent: when he was 15 he came to live in Spain. The first thing he did was sign up for tennis lessons to meet people. Now they know her all over the world, but not because of her reverse. Ms Nina represents the new reggaeton and nails it with a phrase. “You don’t have to take it so seriously.” So music and life are more fun.

You have just released a new EP, how would you define it?

Yes, it’s called Tastiness. It has five songs and is about the flavor you need in your life, the spice you need to change your mood. The advance was Sensations, together with Pablo Chill-E.

How does this collaboration take place?

I was in Miami and Pablo was coming from New York. We got together and I taught him the subject. I did it with a super powerful producer in Miami. As soon as he heard it, he wanted to participate. I took it to the studio, we smoked marijuana and recorded it. Then I had to catch a flight to return to Spain, without sleeping … that day was an adventure.

Do you notice much difference between how the songs are produced in Spain and in Miami?

In Miami you go to a new video game screen. There are very big producers, in studios that don’t know you, without speaking English well… it’s a challenge that I overcame. And I am very proud that important people have wanted to work with me. And it shows in the sound quality. It is well mixed, I sing better… it is good that there is progress from when I started, four years ago.

Which artist have you enjoyed the most?

Of the last ones… I really liked the song I did with Princess Alba. Also with Pablo Chill-E, it was interesting that he recorded his part of the video clip in Chile and I here.

And with what style of artist do you feel most comfortable? He has songs with trap people but also with Alaska …

With Alaska it was good because I collaborate with people who like their music. I respect her, she is one of the leaders of the Madrid scene.

What music do you listen to the most?

I listen to David Bowie a lot. A lot of salsa, Héctor Lavoe, also cumbia… everything.

How do you see the Argentine scene?

In Argentina people collaborate with everyone, the girls too… in Spain it is very difficult. Hopefully in the future it will resemble a bit, but it seems that people are afraid to show that they support another person for fear of looking like a bore. There seem more companions and friends, here there is a lot of pride.

How do you see the role of women in reggaeton? What do you think of the controversy over the video clip of Bitch?

I think that if that video had been the other way around, nobody would say anything. And why do they put all the blame on J Balvin? It is a song in which both have the responsibility. I like the music of both of them and obviously I am not in favor of machismo.

Do you think that the viralization of reggaeton can be a vehicle for society to be more open to talk about taboo topics such as sex?

Reggaeton lyrics are taken very explicit, but there are love lyrics, others that help you to have fun, to be yourself, to raise your self-esteem… It won’t change the world, but it helps a little. And that you don’t have to take everything so seriously, it’s fun music.

You commented in an interview that when you arrived in Spain there was only reggaeton in Latin parties and now there is it in all of them, when was the turning point?

When J Balvin became better known, reggaeton became more mainstream… I think there was always a bit of reggaeton around the Canary Islands or Juan Magán. But five years ago, with the trap scene in Spain, which also started doing reggaeton, it gained more prominence.

Has Spain been able to take advantage of the powerful trap scene it had?

What Pxxr Gvng did nobody did. Yung Beef for me is one of the best and when I am in South America, anyone says that his group was a reference. Each one makes their way and what they have done is very different, they were the first. I think they should have more recognition.

Does reggaeton still have a negative stigma in Spain?

People are still very classist with reggaeton. Also with cumbia, which in Argentina was only low class and now it is being recognized more. Reggaeton is always going to be a bit marginalized. But reggaeton today is very pop.

Do you play any sport?

When I came to Spain I signed up for the Red Cross, tennis … and I came to Madrid.

Do music people hang out with athletes?

Personally I have not agreed. I’ve seen Messi with Bizarrap lately, but I don’t know anyone.

What did you do at recess or in PE?

I was lazy … I always said that my head hurt. Now I have a personal trainer in the gym. It’s tough, but I like it when I see the results. Also because he has a routine and I go three times a week. I also teach dance classes, which is the most fun.
