Referendum process begins to ban abortion in Colombia

Before the National Registry of Civil Status the promoter committee of the referendum that seeks to modify the Colombian Constitution to guarantee the right to life was presented and born of all citizens.

In practice, the initiative would prohibit abortion in any circumstance and it would repeal the ruling of the Constitutional Court that legalized this type of procedure freely during the first six months of gestation.

the senator Mila Romero, spokeswoman for the committee, affirmed that “there will be the right to life and the right to be born from conception. Just as we had that right, we guarantee the same right for all citizens who are yet to be born.”

After the presentation of this committee before the entity, the promoters of the referendum must take to the streets to collect at least two million signatures that support the proposal, so that it can continue its process.

the senator Maria del Rosario Guerra said that “Although the law requires a minimum of two million signatures, which is 5% of the electoral census, We are betting on more than 5 million signatures to collect, that the message of Colombians that we say yes to life and no to abortion be forceful. We hope that decision will be respected and take its course both in Congress and in the Court.”

In the same way, the referendum would eliminate the three grounds with which abortion is allowed in Colombia: when it is a case of rape, when the life of the mother is in danger, or when there is malformation of the fetus.

representative Gabriel Vallejo said that “abortion is not being considered as a right and no cause is being contemplated that allows this practice. and that is part of the question that is being asked of the Colombian people.”

The senator John Milton Rodríguez, who is also a member of the promoter committee, said that “we must put the culture of death in a tatequieto. This is a referendum that is done with respect and without violence and we ask the Court not to modify the Constitution, it is a defense of life from the moment of conception”.
