Reduce the salary of senators and representatives to the Chamber, in Congresshas been one of the initiatives that has not managed to overcome the debates to become a law of the Republic; For this reason, it has had various speakers throughout history.
This 2025 -definitely- will not be the exceptionas announced by the senator of the Historical Pact Iván Cepeda, who pointed out that said project, if the salaries of congressmen were lowered, would be a reality: “Since the congressmen who sank the financing law are so concerned about the fiscal situation and want us to tighten our belts from the State, I propose to you, colleagues: let’s present a bill to reduce our salaries”.
And what reaches the bank account of the legislators is nothing more and nothing less than 48 million pesostherefore, many citizens agree that this project becomes a law.

The congressman’s announcement received support of several senators and representatives of the Government coalition. In addition, Cepeda said that he already has 27 signatures to present the project and debate it when the Legislature resumes work.
In this regard, the Democratic Center, who stated that, at the time of voting, senators and representatives did not support the initiative: “The decrease or freezing of congressmen’s salaries has been a historic battle for the Democratic Center. This initiative, which since 2016 has been led by party congressmen, has been systematically rejected on several occasions by sectors that today, for electoral purposes, try to appropriate that flag.“.

For his part, the representative of that party, Hernán Cadavid, stated: “You sign the project, create the headline and when it comes time to approve it in Congress, the members of your party oppose the initiative and in other cases they do not appear”.
It is worth mentioning that this idea has passed at least 15 times in recent years by the Legislativebut, evidently, without any success on any of the previous occasions.
