Red Flag: Wave of arrests is due to the government's fear of an increase in protests

Carlos Hermoso, deputy general secretary of Bandera Roja, assures that the different demonstrations that have been carried out in the country demanding pensions, low wages and other labor demands, motivate the apprehensions of political and social leaders. He assures that the organization will not pay attention to intimidation and announces the creation of a national front against repression

Seven social activists and human rights defenders have been arrested in the last three days and most of them are members of the Bandera Roja party, a leftist organization that was highly critical of Hugo Chávez, made common cause at the time with the opposition coalitions Coordinadora Democrática and Democratic Unity Roundtable (MUD) and remains in opposition to the government of Nicolás Maduro.

This new wave of arrests began on Monday, July 4, when officials from the General Directorate of Military Counterintelligence (Dgcim) apprehended the professor of Chemistry and well-known plastic artist Alcides Bracho, a member of Bandera Roja, and in whose hearing of presentation, made this Thursday, July 7, he was charged with the crimes of conspiracy, possession of a firearm and association.

The series continued on July 5, with the arrest of the president of the Federation of Workers of the Judiciary, union leader and human rights defender, Emilio Negrín, also by officials of the Dgcim in conjunction with the PNB, and on Wednesday 6 July with the first imprisonment of Néstor Astudillo, leader of Bandera Roja, in his residence located in Charallave, from where he was taken by officials dressed in black without showing an arrest warrant.

This Thursday, July 7, Reynaldo Cortés, general secretary of Bandera Roja in Guárico state, was arrested by armed men who did not identify themselves, and Gabriel Blanco, humanitarian worker, husband of human rights defender Diannet Blanco and who was a member of Bandera Red until 2017.

Previously, on July 4, Yeny Zoreliz Pérez Almeida was arrested by officials dressed in black who were looking for her husband, José Castro, a Red Flag militant.

State security forces raided the house located in Falcón state of Alonso Meléndez on July 5, also a Red Flag militant and who has been missing since then.

For Red Flag, it seeks to sow terror

The deputy general secretary of Bandera Roja, Carlos Hermoso, described the wave of arrests carried out by the state security forces as a repressive raid and stressed that in all cases the generic and abstract accusation was made that the wanted persons were “terrorists.” .

“In our opinion, all this has to do with the increase in the mass movement; with the protest, so deeply felt by Venezuelans, of the elderly for fair pensions, also for the rescue of social benefits and for the salary increase, a process in which we have had an outstanding participation, ”he expressed to SuchWhich the leader of the organization.

He expressed that another factor that motivates the arrests is the tendency towards the unity of the social movement, which has also incorporated sectors that come from Chavismo.

He stressed that the repression is not only against Red Flag and stressed that the intention is to sow terror and intimidate the social movement by arresting political and social leaders.

He stressed that the incentive that drives the salary protest is due to the circumstances originating from the fact that, although the government made a salary appear that was previously non-existent, it remains at miserable levels.

He added that people are not stupid, they realize that the State is receiving more income and that the Government can squander resources or direct them to corruption.

“This weekend we had a regional meeting of social activists, union leaders, trade unions and that is something that the government is afraid of, with a view to promoting a national meeting,” said Hermoso.

He assured that the party will not be able to intimidate the government, that the Executive knows very well the trajectory of the organization and is repeating practices that governments carried out prior to the arrival of Chavismo.

“They seek to sow terror and crush the protest and the sectors that develop the initiatives the most, the vanguard, as they say in political jargon,” said Hermoso.

He announced that the party will make the political complaint on a national scale, and that, in the specific case of Alcides Bracho, because of what that comrade means in the artistic and teaching world, a committee will be formed for his freedom; In addition, he indicated that a national front against repression will be created to which all political and social sectors are invited.
