The Network decides rejects the Warrrerist rhetoric in the country and warns that its political use can deepen repression, feed false expectations in the population and remove the democratic solution to the Venezuelan crisis
The Citizen Network decides noted that the “ghost” of a military intervention in the country “cannot be ignored due to the serious implications that it entails”, including its instrumentalization by the government to justify the suffocation of civic space and repression against opponents and activists.
In a release Extended last Thursday, August 14, the organization recalled that the country’s political, social and economic crisis has aggravated from the presidential elections of July 28, 2024, when the National Electoral Council (CNE) proclaimed Nicolás Maduro winner without presenting the disaggregated results required by law, generating a crime and disinformation climate that expands in social networks.
He dedicated himself that the narrative of an “external solution”, fueled by recent United States ads on measures against transnational crime in Latin America, could lead to a scenario of political violence with high cost for the civilian population, deepen polarization and remove any possibility of peaceful solution.
The Network rejected “approaches and actions linked to that warrior rhetoric” and denounced that, together with the persecution of dissent, there has been an irregular increase in arrests for political reasons and violations of procedural guarantees.
«The path of political violence, far from offering enduring solutions, usually extends the conflict and multiply its dangers. What proceeds is containment, debate and courage to set positions and offer arguments to the public, not feed unrealistic expectations, ”said the organization.
Decide called a national and international interlocution that respects citizen autonomy and promotes the conditions for an alternation endorsed by voters, not by external factors. “Our call is to assume a public and critical debate that offers arguments to the citizen, not reasons for fantasy and the consequent despair,” the organization concluded in the statement.
The network decides (citizen defense of democracy) was presented in April of this year and marks a strategic change of an opposition sector that prioritizes electoral participation as a tool for democratic resistance, rejects the sanctions and secondary tariffs linked to the country.
Henrique Capriles, Jesús “Chuo” Torrealba, Henri Falcón, Tomás Guanipa and Vladimir Villegas are some of the figures that are part of the network decide.
