He National Institute of Civil Defense (INDECI)through his National Emergency Operations Center (COEN)issued a warning for possible activation of streams in three regions of the country during the next 24 hours. The Notice No. 003-2026 Short Term, published this Sunday, January 4, indicates extremely intense rainfall (red alert) in several provinces of Áncash, Ayacucho and Huancavelica.
Provinces on maximum alert
Localities identified as most at risk include:
- Ancash: Huaylas, Mariscal Luzuriaga, Pomabamba, Yungay and Sihuas
- Ayacucho: Cangallo, Huanca Sancos, Lucanas and Víctor Fajardo
- Huancavelica: Castrovirreyna, Huancavelica and Huaytará
The phenomenon could last until 1:00 pm on Monday, January 5 and include electric shocks and gusts of wind. Regions such as Ica, Junín, La Libertad and Lima present a moderate alert, while Cajamarca and Puno face lower risks.
Urgent prevention measures
Given this risk, INDECI urges local and regional governments to verify evacuation routes, ensuring that they are clear and signposted to safe areas. They must also confirm the operation of health centers, fire companies and police stations in the event of possible emergencies.
Meanwhile, the entity recommends implementing early warning systems with whistles, bells, alarms, sirens or loudspeakers in coordination with local authorities. Each family must prepare and apply their Family Emergency Plan.
INDECI indicated that it will maintain permanent monitoring of the alerted areas and coordinate with regional authorities to mitigate the effects of the weather event. Senamhi suggests reinforcing roofs and windows, in addition to reporting leaning poles and trees on public roads.
The authorities must take this warning with maximum responsibility to protect communities during the beginning of the rainy season in the Peruvian mountains.
