The rector of the Autonomous University of Chiriquí (UNACH) broke the silence. Etelvina Bonagas gave statements and assured that she and her family have been victims of unfounded news, in addition, she defended the appointment of her son.
He announced that everything that is done at UNACHI, as a public university, is approved and endorsed by the Comptroller General of the Republic.
“I greatly respect the press but there has been a lot of unfounded information… The Autonomous University of Chiriquí as a public institution has all the endorsement of the Comptroller, my son is a professional like any other professional, and the director of Decentralization was appointed in a period when I was not rector”, she said, assuring that all appointed personnel must meet all the requirements to be able to enter this higher education house of studies.
He explained that it has nothing to do with hiring and that this is chosen out of necessity. Regarding her excessive salary, she said that she does not have to give up that right, since she has given many years as a professional to that educational institution.
She assured that the payroll has not grown and that this year 2022 she has not made any appointments.
He stressed that this Law was approved since of all the universities, only Unachi and Technological were the only ones that did not have re-election, he said that until now he has not decided if he will run again for the position of rector and that with all the comments they have It has done a lot of damage to her as rector and to the university.
Bonagas said that the salary he has has been earned by giving life to the university for 44 years. She said that as rector she earns $7,000 ($4,000 as rector and $3,000 as representation expenses), plus she has a 50% full professor’s salary.
He stressed that this double salary is guaranteed in article 67 of Law 4 of January 16, 2006, which mandates them to homologate with the University of Panama.
These statements were made by Bonagas in the National Assembly, where she was summoned to present the support for the 2021 memory of Unachi.
