On November 15, student and graduate elections will be held at the UCV. Rector Víctor Rago indicated that the elections must be held to ensure student representation in university bodies
The rector of the Central University of Venezuela (UCV), Victor Rago, He reiterated that the student and graduate elections scheduled for next November 15 will be held on the date agreed upon by the University Council, despite the deficiencies in the budget assigned for the process.
The highest authority of the university pointed out that the rumors about a possible suspension of the elections are false.
“Regarding the rumors of a pact with the government not to hold elections, I tell you: there is nothing to indicate that such a calamity is going to occur,” said the rector.
Rago’s statements were made during the swearing-in of the electoral subcommittees of the UCV. The event took place on October 25 in the Carlos Marx Auditorium, of the Faculty of Economic and Social Sciences (Faces) and was led by the members of the Electoral Commission, chaired by Professor Alicia Smith-Kelly.
The representatives to the subcommittees of the 11 faculties would attend the central commission to receive the electoral material and organize the voting process at the university.
Rago pointed out that if the elections are not held at the UCV, the institution will be left without representatives to the faculty councils and the University Council.
During the activity, the rector of the UCV indicated that elections must be held to ensure student representation in university bodies. He added that adjustments have been made in the organization of the elections, mainly due to the little budget available for the process.
«We asked for external financing and we did not get a response. We decided to do everything within our power internally so that the elections take place,” Rago said.
The university authority reported that the Electoral Commission provisionally withdrew from the Fifth Silenia (traditional headquarters of the organization) because the conditions of the place were inadequate for the work of the governing body of the voting. He expressed that the necessary financing is being sought to recover the building.
Two years after the last elections, the Central University of Venezuela will hold elections to define the representatives of the student centers, school and faculty councils, university council and the new members of the Federation of University Centers (FCU-UCV).
The rector emphasized that the votes are at least a year late, since the university’s electoral instructions establish that student representation positions must be subject to elections annually.
In addition, new representatives of graduates in schools and faculties will be elected. The last elections in this sector at the university were also held in 2022.
The candidacy registration process closed last Saturday, October 26, and so far, the Electoral Commission has not published the lists of candidates for the different representation positions at the university.
