The rector of the Gabriel René Moreno Autonomous University (Uagrm), Vicente Cuéllar, guaranteed his attendance at the meeting called by the Ministry of Economy for this Friday, October 18, at 2:30 p.m., in the city of La Paz, where the topic of the university budget will be discussed. However, Cuéllar clarified that this call does not suspend the mobilizations announced by the university.

The rector confirmed that the Uagrm will carry out a protest this Friday, when the students and teachers will take their desks to the streets and highways to spend classes on the roads, in demand of a fair budget.

“The Government is not complying with the obligation to allocate sufficient resources for the university, which puts at risk the end of the semester and the admission of new high school students next year,” Cuéllar warned.

The Santa Cruz university denounces that the budget offered by the Government, of 68 million bolivianos, is insufficient to cover its obligations until the end of the year. Cuéllar pointed out that more than 120,000 Uagrm students will be affected if this situation is not resolved.

“The people must join, because the children of transporters, drivers, union members, of all those who cannot pay for a private university study here,” he said.

The rector also criticized the Government for “discriminate” against the Uagrm in the allocation of resources and assured that the lack of political will is the main reason why the university’s demand is not met.

“They put us last in any negotiation. This university has always been the most discriminated against in budgetary issues,” he lamented.

The blockades will be carried out at strategic points such as Yapacaní, Montero, Camiri, San Ignacio, San Julián and los Valles. The protest will last 24 hours, But Cuéllar warned that, if responses are not received, the measure could become indefinite and the mobilizations could intensify.
