The UPT through a statement announced its loss. “With deep sorrow, the university authorities must inform the members of the university community of the Private University of Tacna and the general public of the death of our esteemed rector, Dr. Javier Eduardo Eugenio Ríos Lavagna, which occurred tonight in the city of Arequipa”they pointed out.

The highest representative of the UPT was elected in 2017 by the University Assembly to replace Dr. Hugo Calizaya Calizaya and his term ended on November 7, 2022. He based his work on his management on the research, social responsibility and the quality process.
A dentist by profession and with a doctorate in health sciences, he was part of altruistic groups such as the Tacna Rotary Club. During his time at UPT he was accompanied by Dr. Elva Acevedo Velásquez in the academic vice-chancellor’s office and Dr. Javier Hurtado Mejía in the research vice-chancellor’s office.
