The cold wave generated in an Arctic mass combined with high migratory pressures that has affected the last few days left its mark on the history of the region at dawn this Tuesday. meteorology in Cuba, by establishing a new temperature record.
The Institute of Meteorology (Insmet) confirmed that the thermometer at its station located in Indio Hatuey, in Matanza, registered a drop to 0 degrees Celsius at 7:00 am, a figure never before seen in Cuban territory.
The institution indicated that at the same point, but three hours earlier, a temperature of 0.1 degrees Celsius had been recorded, enough to beat the previous limit of 0.6, which was measured on February 18, 1996 in Bainoa, province of Mayabeque.
That same day corresponded to the temperature record (2.4) for the month of February in Indio Hatuey, which was shattered this Monday when the thermometer in that town dropped to 1.4 degrees Celsius.
Now the combination of atmospheric factors has led to a notable decrease in temperatures in almost the entire national territory, causing them to remain below 10 degrees today in 32 meteorological stations in the country.
In Tapaste (2.8) and Aguada de Pasajeros (3.0), localities of Mayabeque and Cienfuegos, respectively, other significant values were generated.
The new cold front that began to affect the country since last weekend was accompanied by strong winds and swells, which has mainly affected the northern coast of the western portion, generating penetration of the sea and flooding in the lower areas.
The situation forced the evacuation of more than 3,000 people who reside mainly in the area of the Havana coast known as the Malecón.
