Madrid Spain.- The number of Cubans who arrived in the United States from October 1, 2021 (beginning of the current fiscal year) to May 31, 2022 reached the record number of 140,602.
This data, revealed yesterday by the Department of Customs and Border Protection (CBP), confirms that Cuba is going through the greatest migration crisis in its history, surpassing the 125,000 Cubans who arrived in the US during the Mariel boatlift in 1980.
The document indicates that during the month of May alone, 25,692 people from Cuba arrived in the United States with the intention of requesting asylum. Of these, 276 did so in Florida.
In April, the arrival of 35,080 Caribbean people had been registered, in March 32,398 and in February 16,657.
During the last eight months, the states of Texas and Arizona are the ones through which the largest number of Cuban migrants have arrived in the United States.
So far this fiscal year, the Coast Guard has intercepted more than 2,400 Cubans in the Straits of Florida.
The CBP also mentions in its report Title 42, from which it was determined in March 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the prohibition of the introduction of people from Mexico and Canada, in the interest of public health. .
Last April, officials from the United States and the Cuban regime met in Washington DC to discuss the implementation of the Migration Agreements between the northern nation and the Island.
During the conversations the US delegation highlighted areas of successful cooperation on migration, while identifying problems that have been obstacles to meeting the goals of the Agreements.
“Enabling safe, legal, and orderly migration between Cuba and the United States remains in the mutual interest of both countries and is consistent with United States interests in fostering family reunification and promoting greater respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms in Cuba. Cuba,” the State Department said.
