The Secretary of Health, David Kershenobich Stallnikowitz, acknowledged that Mexico faces a rebound of measles cases, largely due to the low vaccination coverage recorded during the Covid-19 pandemic and that it has caused that only 87% of the target population is currently immunized.
“I have mentioned above, that our goal is to reach 95% of the vaccination. What happens is that during the period of the Covid-19 Pandemia, the children did not come to vaccinate in the same way that it normally occurred; then, in them the vaccination was lower. Currently, these children have grown and then, they are the children that we have to vaccinate more importantly,” said the official during the official. Federal Executive on Tuesday, September 23.
Kershenobich said that the current outbreak has import origin from Texas, and that the strategy has concentrated on containing the infections in Chihuahua.
“And we have managed to contain the outbreaks that have been, mainly in the state of Chihuahua, where we still have migrant workers who have to vaccinate,” said the head of the Ministry of Health.
He also recalled that inoculation is now applied at 6 months, 12 and 18 months, and a second dose at 6 years of age. “Vaccination cannot be forced, we have to appeal to people come to vaccinate,” he said.
Until Tuesday, an accumulated of 4,653 cases had been confirmed in the country; of which eight had been confirmed in the last 24 hours, in addition to a total of 21 people who lost their lives for this condition.
Chihuahua concentrates the largest number of infections with 4,293 cases and 20 deaths, which represents an incidence rate of 108.3 per 100,000 inhabitants. They are followed by Sonora (97 confirmed cases, 1 death), Coahuila (55 confirmed cases), Guerrero (51 confirmed cases), Michoacán (25 confirmed cases) and Durango (22 confirmed cases).
Health routes
In the morning President Claudia Sheinbaum announced that next Friday the second stage of health routes will conclude.
“Now the second installment begins. Remember that month by month, the keys of medicines that were defined as necessary for the primary level of health care, and the secondary and the tertiary will be delivered; that is, health centers, hospitals and specialty hospitals,” he said.
The program consists in the delivery of 147 types of medicines and supplies in 8,342 health centers of 23 states affiliated with the IMSS well -being.
