Diego Aguirre will become the 21st Uruguayan coach in the history of Olimpia. Among the previous 20, 10 reached the title of champion, being Luis Cubilla the most winner with 15 official Olympic laps.
The first of all was José María Rodríguez, who was hired in 1971.
“El Chema” came with the aura of having won two titles with Guaraní in 1967 and 1969 and did not disappoint the expectationachieving the championship that season. He had to leave in the middle of 1973after two failures in the Libertadores and after losing the final against Cerro Porteño, in 1972.

Later they arrived without pain or glory at the institution striped Alcides “Cacho” Silveira (1973) and Roberto Scarone (1974), who was vice-champion of the Libertadores, in 1972, directing Universitarios de Perú.
In 1979 an incurable winner appeared, as was Don Luis Cubilla, the most successful coach in the history of our football. “El Negro” achieved no less than 15 titles in the Dean. There were eight league championships (1979, 1982, 88, 89, 1995, 97, 98 and 99); two Copa Libertadores (1979 and 1990); two South American Cup Winners’ Cups (1991 and 2003); an Inter-American Cup (1979), an Intercontinental Cup (1979) and a South American Super Cup (1990). Cubilla set the bar very high in Olimpia and is almost impossible to match.
After Cubilla left at the end of 1979, his brother, Pedro, was hired. who completed the work left behind by Luis, winning the rematch matches of the Intercontinental Cup against Malmö from Sweden (2-1) and the Interamerican Cup against FAS del Salvador (5-0), both matches at the Defensores del Chaco stadium .

Pedro’s stay in Para Uno did not last long, being replaced that same year by his compatriotJose de Leon and when he left, his assistant replaced him Sergio Zanacchi, who was also thrown out, arriving at the striped club José Sacía, with whom Olimpia reached the 1980 title.
At the beginning of 1981, Sacía was appointed coach of the Paraguayan team that was preparing to play the qualifiers for the 1982 World Cup in Spain, against Chile and Ecuador, and replaced him. Roque Fernández, who also championed that year Sergio Markarián and Aníbal “Maño” Ruiz, Luis Cubilla’s former assistant, also left their mark on the dean entity by winning the titles in 1983 and 1985 respectively. In the midst of them, in 1984, he passed without revealing Angel Castelnoble.

In 1993, Éver Almeida, who won 16 titles with the Olympic team during his playing days, had his well-deserved opportunity to direct Olimpia and more than achieved its goal by reaching the local championship undefeated.
It took 20 years for the great Éver to raise the Dean to the top of America again, losing the 2013 Copa Libertadores Champion titleas a result of the slip suffered by “Tanque” Ferreira, in the rematch against Atlético Mineiro.
Another history of the fringed, Miguel Ángel Piazza, one of the heroes of 1979, also gave the Olympic turn as a coach by winning the Apertura 1999, but an illness left him out of the club and also out of the absolute title.
The “Goyo” Pérez, in 2009, also had his internship without success at the Dean.
And in 2011 Gerardo Pelusso came, to break Olimpia’s 10-year drought without titles, triumphing in the Clausura tournament of that year.
Then they went through the Forest, but without achieving anything relevant, Diego Alonso (2014), Pablo Repetto (2017), Sergio Orteman (2021) and Álvaro Gutiérrez (2021).
Olimpia generally did well with the Uruguayan professionals.
Will Diego Aguirre be able to emulate his compatriot predecessors? Time will tell.
