The world of sport, politics and society are in mourning after receiving the unfortunate news of the death of the Uruguayan footballer Juan Izquierdo at the age of 27 in the Brazilian city of Sao Paulo, where he had been hospitalized since last Thursday with a critical neurological condition.
Club Nacional de Football, where the Uruguayan played, announced the news through a message on social media X in which it expressed its condolences to the player’s family and friends. “With the deepest pain and shock in our hearts, Club Nacional de Football announces the death of our beloved player Juan Izquierdo. We express our most sincere condolences to his family, friends, colleagues and loved ones. All of Nacional is mourning his irreparable loss. RIP. Juan, you will be with us forever,” the message from the tricolor club highlights.
Likewise, Nacional’s traditional rival, Peñarol, published a message on the same social network in which it “deeply regrets” the death of Izquierdo. “Club Atlético Peñarol deeply regrets the death of Juan Manuel Izquierdo, former player of our institution. We express our most heartfelt condolences and embrace his family, his friends and Club Nacional de Football in this time of so much pain,” said the black and gold team.
Meanwhile, the Uruguayan Football Association also expressed its condolences via the same means of communication. “We regret with deep pain and sadness the death of the Nacional footballer, Juan Izquierdo. Our condolences to his family, friends and colleagues in this very difficult moment. RIP,” says the message from the governing body of Uruguayan football.
These messages of condolence were joined by Argentine teams Boca Juniors and River Plate, Brazilian teams Sao Paulo and Fluminese, Colo Colo from Chile, Olimpia from Paraguay, Alianza Lima from Peru and Italian team Juventus, as well as the South American Football Confederation (Conmebol), among others.

For his part, the presidential candidate of Uruguay for the Colorado Party, Andrés Ojeda, also published a message dedicated to the Uruguayan footballer. “The worst news, the saddest. Our condolences go to his family, friends and colleagues. RIP Juan Izquierdo,” he said. The presidential candidate for that country for the Frente Amplio party, Yamandú Orsi, also made public his words of encouragement to family and colleagues. “A whole country that refuses to believe, a football-loving people that wants it not to be true, that it cannot be. All of Uruguay embraces that family, its club, its colleagues. Rest in peace,” he said.
