After the sanction of Law 292 of April 1, 2022, which reorganizes the Autonomous University of Chiriquí (Unachi), the administrative vice-rector of this house of higher studies, Olda Cano, assured that this is an opportunity for it to become democratic, within the elections for the new rector.
“This is a great opportunity for us to apply democracy in the Autonomous University of Chiriquí and for the rector on duty to do an excellent job and benefit all three levels (administrators, teachers and students).” he said, noting that The fact that re-election is contemplated within the law does not mean that the rector will remain in office in perpetuity, since students, teachers and administrators have the power to change that with their vote.
He stressed that the law not only establishes re-election but also has aspects that benefit the educational community in general, such as administrative staff who have 8 and 10 years within Unachi without permanence, now they will be able to opt for it, as long as they have two consecutive years providing their services to the entity.
He stated that the permanence will allow these administrators to open credit with banking entities and be able to opt for other benefits that they did not have before with the contract renewals each semester.
He also recalled that teachers will enjoy their seniority bonus and voluntary retirement, which is now protected by law.
