Madrid Spain.- The former president and former first secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC), Raúl Castro Ruz, arrived this Friday at the age of 91, in a Cuba mired in deficiencies of all kinds, repression and mass exodus.
Raúl Castro, despite having “left” his mandate in April 2018, continues to be the one who makes the decisions of the Castro leadership, accepted by the ruler “handpicked” Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez.
During his period of government (2006 – 2018), and later with Miguel Díaz-Canel, the dictator he has been able to maintain, with the coercive methods of the regime, the Castroist structure imposed for decades by his brother, Fidel Castro.
In 2011, it approved a series of measures with a view to complying with the so-called “updating of Cuban economic policy.” However, these measures, which maintained centralized planning, only led to increased shortages and discontent among the people; situation that since 2021 has experienced its worst crisis.
In 2015, Raúl Castro starred, together with the former president of the United States, Barack Obama, in the diplomatic thaw with the northern country.
Castro also made sure to strengthen ties with Cuba’s main allies: Venezuela, Russia, Iran, China, Vietnam and North Korea.
But one of the things he knew how to do best to the detriment of the Cuban people was directing, since 1959, the Revolutionary Armed Forces (FAR), one of the main repressive organizations of the Cuban government.
Away from public events since 2018, shis last appearances have been on January 27 in the March of the Torches, and the parade for International Workers’ Day, this May 1st.
On the occasion of the celebrations, this June 3 Díaz-Canel wrote in Twitter: “Thank you for the teachings, the example, the confidence and the optimism. With you at the forefront, a certainty always emerges: ‘Yes, it can’”.
Congratulations my Army General! in his 91. Thank you for the teachings, the example, the confidence and the optimism. With you at the forefront, a certainty always emerges: “Yes, it can be done.” pic.twitter.com/Hs9Iu6WxvG
