The Spanish journalist and writer Ignacio Ramonet was present at the International Summit Against Fascism this Tuesday from the Teresa Carreño Theater, analyzing the influence of the media in the coup against Comandante Chávez on April 11, 2002.
«That was the first media coup in history. It had never happened before that the media were equal or even more protagonists than the military themselves who act in a coup. The private media traditionally mobilize against a popular government, but here they were directly protagonists, ”reflected the political analyst.
Venezuela was a very particular case, from Ramonet’s point of view, since the owners of the media were involved in the coup against Comandante Chávez and had prepared everything together with the military sector and even added those who were still undecided.
Ramonet, who also presented his book The surveillance empirehe added about that April 11 “that the media had already anticipated and prepared what would happen in Puente Llaguno.”
The relationship between the Venezuelan media and the Revolution had been pleasant and relaxed, recalled Ignacio Ramonet, thanks directly to “the tremendous personality of Comandante Chávez and even helping his democratic victory in 1999.”
April 11, for the professor, meant the shielding of the Bolivarian revolution in terms of communication with the strengthening of Venezolana de Televisión, as well as the creation of Telesur and community and independent media.
