Raise awareness and raise awareness

Today marks the International Day against Gender Violence.

Every November 25, rallies, mobilizations and interventions of different types are held in different parts of the world to raise awareness of a scourge that does not distinguish between social classes: violence against women.

Today is commemorating the International Day to Fight Gender Violence.

The issue did not go unnoticed in the last session of the Cerro Largo Departmental Board.

“Tirelessly on this emblematic date for feminist movements and society as a whole, we must make visible, raise awareness and demand public policies that generate sociocultural changes to eradicate violence against women, girls and adolescents” He began by saying the Psychologist Judith Lemos.

“Gender Violence continues to be one of the most widespread and widespread human rights violations in the world. It is considered that 1 in 3 women has suffered at some point in their life from violence in its multiple manifestations that range from the most subtle to physical and psychological injuries with damage that can be temporary or lifelong, as well as leading victims to suicide” said the Mayor of the Broad Front Bench.

Later he pointed out that gender-based violence harms not only the victims but also the closest emotional environment and society as a whole.

This year’s UN Women slogan is End Digital Violence against all Women and Girls. “This is one of the forms of gender-based violence” said. “It constitutes one of the cruelest and most widespread abuses currently due to the increasing use of Social Networks. The threats that victims receive, the weak regulation, the anonymity of the aggressors who hide under a false identity and the little support for the victims” express.

Lemos revealed that millions of girls and adolescents are affected every year by child sexual exploitation and abuse through digital media. “Some of the tools that are frequently used as detailed by UN Women are the following: cyber harassment or online threat, online harassment and sexual harassment, misuse of intimate images often called revenge porn or leaking of nudes, falsification of images using artificial intelligence, images and videos with digitally manipulated audio, hate speech, publication of private information, harassment, surveillance, online monitoring to control a person’s activities, online sexual grooming and exploitation, identity theft and misogenic networks” he detailed.

“These acts that occur on computer networks often lead to violence in real life, with physical abuse and even femicides” warned the Mayor of the Frente Amplio.

“The damage, in turn, can be long-lasting and affect survivors for a long time, triggering mental health problems such as depression, anxiety, self-harm, attempts at self-elimination and completed suicide.” he stressed.

In the case of adolescent girls, their educational careers are frequently interrupted because the shame of being exposed leads them to isolate themselves and not want to go to educational centers. “In adult women, it causes absenteeism, job losses and resignations. In addition, digital violence becomes more acute when there are forms of cross-discrimination such as discrimination based on ethnic-racial reasons, disability, gender identity or sexual orientation.” said Judith Lemos. “It is essential to achieve gender equality since social development is not possible as long as situations of violence against women persist” he added.

She said that comprehensively addressing violence against women requires understanding that it is about promoting a cultural change based on the construction of relationships of equal rights and solidarity between men and women. “The society we want is a society where all women live without violence of any kind” emphasized the Mayor of the Broad Front Bench.

In the end, he invited the general population to join the activities that will be carried out today in Cerro Largo. He also requested that the façade of the Departmental Board be illuminated on this day with the violet color that distinguishes the fight against gender violence.
