Rainy season threatens increase in dengue cases

Hoy Paraguay

From the General Directorate of Health Surveillance they stated that, although the epidemiological situation of dengue remains stable, it is likely that cases will increase.

Dr. Guillermo Sequera, head of Health Surveillance, expressed his concern about the climatic situation in the country as a result of the incessant rains that were registered in the national territory, a condition that will persist in the coming days, according to the weather forecast.

“Let us remember that we had a fairly dry summer, which allowed the breeding sites that are usually in homes not to become 5-star hotels for mosquitoes,” he pointed out. However, with the return of the rains, the reproduction of mosquitoes began to proliferate.

He mentioned that from Senepa they reported that the variety of mosquito that currently predominates, fortunately is not Aedes aegypti, “but in the same way we continue to register dengue in the national territory.”

Sequera refers that, although epidemiological stability with dengue is currently experienced, taking into account climatic conditions, “it is likely that cases will increase.”

The epidemiologist does not rule out that the current decline in dengue cases may be due to underreporting as a result of the wave caused by Omicron, which shows symptoms similar to those of the dengue virus.

He stated that every headache or fever was directly associated with the pandemic virus and when this was ruled out, another cause was no longer sought; “It is likely that it was dengue.”

“We have a lot of epidemiological noise,” admitted the head of Health Surveillance. “We believe that now that COVID-19 is giving up, they are going to begin to reveal that many of the cases we saw were dengue.”

On the other hand, he pointed out that, although Central and Asunción are the ones that show the most cases of the disease, however, in the last three weeks there have been decreases, with the exception of Caaguazú and Amambay, which show a different pattern.

In Asunción, mainly in the Loma Pytá and Trinidad neighborhoods, a greater number of positive cases of dengue are being registered; while, in Central, between the districts of Luque and San Lorenzo, it is where more cases of the disease have been reported in recent weeks. The circulating serotypes in the country are DEN-2 and DEN-1.
