The heavy rains that have hit part of the state of Alagoas in recent days have already left around 56,000 people homeless or homeless. In the first case, they are entire families whose homes were affected by the force of the waters and who, with nowhere to go, were forced to seek shelter in improvised places by the Government. Displaced people are people who have stayed with friends, relatives, neighbors or in establishments paid for with their own resources.
This afternoon, Governor Paulo Dantas reported on his Twitter account that more than half of the 102 cities in Alagoas are in an emergency situation. “I met with the 56 municipalities that entered the Emergency Decree to talk about priority actions,” Dantas wrote.
Part of these cities declared an emergency situation even before the rains of the last few days, as the state had already been hit by heavy rains in May and June. This Monday (4), the federal government, which had already recognized the emergency condition in 23 previously affected municipalities, recognized the decrees of 15 more localities that, with this, will be able to request federal resources for relief actions and humanitarian assistance.
The ministers of Regional Development, Daniel Ferreira, and of Citizenship, Ronaldo Bento, visited Alagoas this Monday. Accompanied by members of the national Civil Defense, the ministers recommended attention to danger signs, such as rising river levels; movements of waterlogged soil and cracks or cracks in walls of buildings and walls.
“Self-protection measures have to be maintained and people have to be alert to announcements from local authorities,” Ferreira said. “The heavy rains [dos últimos dias] cooled down, but more rain is still forecast for the next few hours. All springs are full and there are still risks of landslides and overflow of springs”, added the minister.
According to Ferreira, there will be no shortage of budgetary resources for the national Civil Defense to help municipalities that ask for help. According to the Ministry of Regional Development, for Alagoas alone, R$ 20.4 million has already been released this year for investments in actions to respond to natural disasters.
The Minister of Citizenship, Ronaldo Bento, announced that the federal government will advance the payment of the continued benefit benefit (BPC) to 112,000 Alagoas families.
Employees of the Ministry of Health and members of the Armed Forces and the Federal Highway Police (PRF) were mobilized to help state agencies provide relief and humanitarian assistance to affected people. A technical team from the Ministry of Citizenship, responsible for coordinating the Unified Social Assistance System, was also sent to the state to help manage temporary housing for homeless families and purchase basic supplies.
