He National Institute of Civil Defense of Peru (Indeci) warned this Tuesday that a total of 234 districts in the country’s mountains are at risk of being affected by landslides, landslides and other mass movements due to the intense rains expected for this week.
The report, prepared by the National Center for Estimation, Prevention and Reduction of Disaster Risk (Cenepred) based on a meteorological warning from the National Meteorology and Hydrology Service of Peru (Senamhi), identifies Ayacucho as the department with the highest number of districts at very high risk (33), followed by Apurímac (24), Huancavelica (21), Áncash (8), Cuzco (8), Huánuco (6), Junín (6), Arequipa (3), Pasco (3), Lima (2) and Puno (2).
Additionally, another 118 districts in these regions are classified as having a high risk of being impacted.
Given this situation, Indeci urged local and regional governments to review evacuation routes and guarantee the operation of health centers, fire stations and police stations. He also recommended that the population reinforce the roofs of their homes and establish early warning systems in coordination with the authorities.
The National Emergency Operations Center (COEN) is monitoring the areas at risk and coordinating with the authorities to mitigate the possible impacts of this meteorological phenomenon.
