Rains in eastern Cuba leave one dead and several towns flooded

Inundación en Granma, Lluvias, Cuba

MIAMI, United States. — The heavy rains in eastern Cuba left their first victim. This is a 60-year-old man, from Jiguaní (Granma), who died from drowning.

According to the telecentre cnc tvMany families have lost many belongings as a result of the floods.

He Special Notice No. 3 of the Cuban Institute of Meteorology (INSMET) points out that “this hydrometeorological situation continues to be related to the persistence of a trough in the middle and upper levels of the troposphere over the Gulf of Mexico, which maintains a humid flow from the southwest over the entire country, in combination with atmospheric instability and local factors”.

The network of rain gauges from INSMET and the National Institute of Hydraulic Resources (INRH) has reported significant accumulations in 53 rain gauges, with rainfall above 100 millimeters, registering in 14 of them accumulations that exceed 200 millimeters.

The greatest rainfall has been recorded in the province of Granma, specifically in the towns of Las Mercedes (360 mm), Ciudad Escolar Camilo Cienfuegos (294.9 mm), Charco Redondo (280.3 mm), Jiguaní (259.8 mm ) and Ox Diverter (250 mm).

In the municipality of Jiguaní, notable effects on agriculture, electricity service and housing are reported, after the floods reported by the flooding of rivers and ravines. The locals also give an account of the outlet of its bed of the Jiguaní River, a fact “unprecedented in history.”

The rains and the flooding of the river have seriously affected the urban part of the town, leaving a large amount of debris. The walls of some buildings also collapsed, including a barbershop completely destroyed by the force of the water blows.

The INSMET adds that “these conditions of atmospheric instability will remain throughout the national territory, since the trough will have very little movement, so the activity of showers, rains and electrical storms will persist in a large part of the country, becoming strong and intense in some localities, mainly in the central and eastern regions”.
