Faced with the impact caused by the rains, municipalities located in the north of the state of Rio de Janeiro suspended classes and public transport. In the region, heavily punished by storms in recent days, two deaths were confirmed. A 62-year-old woman lost her life after a landslide hit her home in Conceição de Macabu and her daughter is hospitalized in serious condition. In Carapebus, the death of a man struck by lightning was recorded.
This afternoon (1st), the mayor of Conceição de Macabu, Valmir Lessa, published a decree declaring a situation of emergency in the affected areas. With the measure, the summoning of volunteers was authorized to reinforce the response actions and the Civil Defense of the municipality started to coordinate the mobilization of the other bodies.
Classes
Activities in school units of the municipal network were suspended until tomorrow (2). Health units in affected areas also did not work throughout the day. Families living in affected areas are being registered. The exhibition of the game between Brazil and Cameroon, which was supposed to take place tomorrow at Praça José Bonifácio Tassara, in the center of the city, was cancelled. The show scheduled to start after the end of the match valid for the World Cup was also canceled.
In Carapebus, classes were also canceled today. The Luiz Carlos Fragoso Municipal School was transformed into a support point for homeless families after the Maricota stream overflowed. The city hall announced that those affected will be registered to have access to benefits from social programs, including the Recomeçar Program, which provides for the release of R$ 3,000 to victims.
Rio+Saneamento, the concessionaire that manages the water supply in Carapebus, said in a note that it created a crisis office after the storm affected the service. “The concessionaire’s teams work, with the help of backhoes and trucks, to gain access to raw (untreated) water collections, which are isolated due to floods in the region”, records the text. As an emergency measure, the concessionaire provided a 40,000-liter tanker truck and two 10,000-liter tanker trucks.
The municipal education network of Macaé has also been carrying out activities since yesterday (30). Students should only return on Monday (5). In two districts of the city, there was also an interruption in the water supply. In addition, given the difficulty of travel, public transport had a reduced offer at some points.
Quissamã is another city that suspended classes today and tomorrow, considering the forecast of heavy rain. The city hall also started a solidarity campaign in favor of the most affected neighboring municipalities, collecting donations of drinking water, cleaning products, food, clothing and other items for residents of Carapebus and Conceição de Macabu. Municipal Civil Defense agents were also made available to assist in the efforts.
