The intense rains that occurred this Sunday afternoon caused trees to fall and damage the roofs of houses in Montevideo, Firefighters spokesman Pablo Benítez told El Observador.
But it also caused water to enter a commercial premises located on Vicente Basagoyti and Ángel Salvo streets, where they kept fumigation products.
The Montevideo Fire Detachment worked in a local in Paso Molino where toxic fumes were released in reaction with the water that entered through the roof.
The rain that entered came into contact with the materials of aluminum phosphide and generated toxic fumes. No casualties have been reported from the incident.
Montevideo Fire Department works to “remove the containers and possibly neutralize them”he stated in an official statement.
