The heavy rain that fell between yesterday (1st) and this morning (2nd) in Rio de Janeiro caused flooding in Baixada Fluminense. In the municipalities of Nova Iguaçu, Belford Roxo and Mesquita, heavy rain caused rivers to overflow.
In Mesquita, a man died after being electrocuted by an electric shock while walking through water in the central region of the municipality. According to the municipal government, a task force is carrying out inspections of homes, clearing roads and cleaning the city.
Nova Iguaçu is on high alert, mainly due to the floods of the Botas and Iguaçu rivers. According to the city hall, during the night it rained 166 millimeters (mm) in just four hours, 175% of the volume expected for the entire month of April.
The neighborhoods of Moquetá and Km 32 were the most affected by the rain and the municipal Civil Defense received 141 requests for inspections. At the Nova Iguaçu General Hospital, there were infiltrations in two ICUs. In one of them, 13 patients had to be transferred to the postoperative sectors.
In Belford Roxo, in just two hours, it rained 228 mm, forcing at least 300 people to leave their homes. About 180 flooding points were registered and there were landslides in Shangrilá and Santa Maria neighborhoods.

In Maricá, also located in the metropolitan region of Rio de Janeiro, the Mumbuca River also had an increase in its level. Part of the Mumbuca bridge has caved in and city hall teams are working to respond to distress calls and relocate families.
In the neighboring municipality of Saquarema, in 24 hours it rained 160 mm, volume expected for the entire month. Some bridges were damaged and points of flooding, fall of walls and trees were recorded. City teams are working to rebuild access to the hardest-hit neighborhoods.
