Rainfall in Venezuela increased 300% in 2025 as a result of climate change

Lluvias en Venezuela aumentaron 300% en 2025 por el cambio climático

The Sectoral Vice President of Science, Technology, Education and Health, Gabriela Jimenez, denounced the impact of the climate crisis in the country in 2025, with a 300% increase in expected rainfall, a phenomenon that the minister directly links to climate change.

During his participation in the World Congress in Defense of Mother Earth, taking place in Caracas, the senior official highlighted how extreme climate variations hit agricultural activity, biodiversity and, directly, the lives of Venezuelans.

This excess rainfall brought with it serious consequences, such as the overflowing of important river basins.

The Minister of Science and Technology also explained the magnitude of the problem by pointing out that, “in the case of the Orinoco, we are seeing growth that exceeds the last 60 years. And as a result of this increase in rain and floods, which affected more than seven thousand Venezuelan families, we also see an increase in the proliferation of vectors, of diseases associated with vectors, as a consequence of what today is called climate change, climate crisis, climate emergency.

This situation, with abrupt and scattered rains, significantly affected agricultural productivity and the daily development of citizens, in addition to generating twice as many cyclones, hurricanes and an increase in the temperature of the Caribbean Sea.

Jiménez stated that the absolute priority lies in the respect, care and health of the soils, crops and all the resources of the ecosystem. Furthermore, he rejected the vision of commodification of nature that the capitalist system promotes.

“Then a scientific agenda becomes a predatory proposal to patent life: it is not possible to patent it, because life is so free,” he stated.
