The beginning of the afternoon saw thunderstorms in areas of the metropolitan region of São Paulo and the coast of São Paulo, in contrast to the stable weather during the beginning of the night. On the south coast, SP Águas measuring stations recorded an accumulated rainfall of around 60 millimeters (mm) in Peruíbe. In Caraguatatuba, on the north coast, there was a record of 68 mm and, in Ubatuba, 66 mm.
The state Civil Defense reported that two bridges were submerged in Ubatuba, with no reports of victims or structural damage. There were occasional floods in Mongaguá, in the center of Ubatuba and in Praia Grande, where three families were removed from their homes, which are closed by the local Civil Defense. The 12 evacuated residents were sent to their relatives’ homes and are part of the 545 homeless people registered in the state this year.
In the metropolitan region, the city of Cajamar was hit again by storms, with hail falling, which also fell heavily in the center of neighboring Barueri, where the roof of a supermarket gave way, slightly injuring four people. There were also records of flooding in Iporanga, in the Alto Ribeira region, south of the state.
Earlier, the entire coast of São Paulo and part of the metropolitan region had warnings for floods and landslides by the National Center for Monitoring and Alerts for Natural Disasters (Cemaden). The most serious were related to the Ubatuba region, where the accumulation of rain increases the risk of landslides. The alert also covers the regions of Juiz de Fora (MG) and Nova Friburgo (in the Rio de Janeiro mountains) and extends until tomorrow. The state of Espírito Santo also has an active alert for landslides until tomorrow. There is also a moderate risk for the southern and central regions of Rio de Janeiro, the south/southwest and Zona da Mata of Minas Gerais, Vale do Rio Doce and the metropolitan regions of Belo Horizonte and Rio de Janeiro.
For the turn of the year, rain showers are forecast, mainly in the Ribeirão Preto region, in the northwest of São Paulo, with no significant accumulations. According to the state Civil Defense, “there is no forecast of rain for the capital of São Paulo during the night of this Tuesday, 31st, therefore, anyone who is going to enjoy New Year’s Eve in Paulista will have steady weather. In the capital, there are conditions for rain showers in the afternoon.”
