This decision ends up displacing her from the position she expected to occupy as first substitute to President Luis Lacalle Pou.
In the letter sent to the Executive Committee of Herrerismo, Raffo stressed that “the value of the given word and the commitment to the people are the essence of politics”, making clear his disagreement with the decision taken by the sector. Consequently, he communicated that he would not be included in the lists for the next elections, stating: “I inform the Executive Committee of Herrerismo that they should not consider my name to be included in any list of the sector for the next elections.”
Raffo’s resignation has caused a strong rift within the Herrera party, and her entourage is evaluating alternatives to join lists of other sectors of the National Party. Meanwhile, within the party it is expected to be known whether Raffo will join another group and if she will finally participate as a candidate for the Senate for another party.
In her letter, the economist expressed her gratitude for the support she has received: “I deeply appreciate the countless displays of affection and solidarity I have received in these hours from different corners of the country, from colleagues and friends in the sector, the party and politics.”
Despite the breakup, Raffo clarified: “I assure the people, ‘the people who walk and burn in the streets’, as Luis Alberto de Herrera said, that they will find me working for the Uruguayans, with a positive attitude and a spirit of renewal, as on the first day I assumed this vital and political commitment,” he concluded.
