The president of the Department of the National Party of Montevideo, Laura Raffo, defended the decision of the Minister of Social Development (MIDES), Martín Lema, to order to stop supporting the Popular and Solidarity Coordinator (CPS), assuring that there are irregularities in the environment.
The CPS rejects the accusations and says that its work “It is verifiable” and that brings together 185 initiatives, between pots and picnic areas, “which serve an average of 190,000 portions of food weekly.” According to Esteban Corrales, who integrates it, “this cannot be swept under the rug. No way. Much less unload on those of us who carry out the task the frustrations of an absent State”.
Raffo responded to these latest statements, denying that the State is “absent” and remarked that she rather sees that it is “more present than ever in the territory, not only through support for food, but through all the support provided by MIDES technicians with the change in the management model” .
The former candidate for the IM also points out that, in her opinion, it is “very clear” that there is a “political articulation” in the work of the CPS. “If there hadn’t been, then, the Coordination would not have dedicated itself to making public notes saying that hunger had increased, that there was not enough food and that the State was absent,” she said.
Criticism of Cosse
He took the opportunity to target the mayor of Montevideo, Carolina Cosse, who questioned Minister Lema’s decision and announced that the Montevieo City Hall will continue to support the popular pots and picnic areas, which are and will be supervised weekly.
Raffo believes that it is disassembled “a story that the mayor had built”, who has spoken of increased hunger, “who spoke of 300 pots and the CPS accounts for 159 pots, and of those 159, 20 are not attended to and another 20 do not exist”.
He also criticized the fact that, as soon as Lema’s decision to cut support for the CPS became known, the mayor “expressed herself against it and began to protect a network that created a political discourse and deceived the population, instead of protecting to the most vulnerable.”
