The original series explores the evolution and history of two of the most emblematic genres of popular music: tango and bolero. With a detailed approach, Ruy Castro mixes historical research and engaging narrative to show how these musical influences intertwined with Brazilian culture.

“The bolero and the tango were special. They were part of the Brazilian’s musical daily life as if they were our thing,” defines the journalist, about the songs created in the 1940s and 1950s. Each week, the listeners of MEC Radio will check an unprecedented edition: The Bolero in Brazil, The Bolero Brazil, The tango dates samba and And Brazil falls in the tango.

The production of Ruy Castro, Heloisa Seixas and Julia Romeu is available on various platforms. First episode

In The Bolero in Brazilthe debut episode of the series, Ruy Castro highlights the coming of several Latin American singers to Brazil, including artists from Mexico and Cuba, where the bolero reigned. The program also points out that even Brazilian singers loved to sing boleros, in Spanish or even in Portuguese.

About Ruy Castro

Journalist and writer Ruy Castro began his professional career as a reporter in 1967 in Rio de Janeiro, and acted in the main vehicles of the Rio and Paulistana press. In 1988 he devoted himself to books and made his debut as a writer in 1990, with the release of No more longing: the history and stories of bossa nova.

He is the author of Biographies by Nelson Rodrigues, Garrincha and Carmen Miranda, historical reconstitutions about Bossa Nova, the samba-song and Rio de Janeiro of the 1920s, as well as novels and works on cinema and literature. In 2021, he was awarded the Machado de Assis Award of the Brazilian Academy of Letters (GLA). The following year, he was elected to occupy Chair 13 of the GLA.
