. The national deputy and member of the Political Committee of the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD), Radhamés Camacho, called on the president, Luis Abinader, to search the Google archives and remember that “with the PLD, rice was bought for 27 pesos…”.
“Google, President, is there. You made a commitment, you told the country that you were going to produce with a gear… when a vehicle is moving at a good speed and you put a gear in it, the transmission is destroyed and that is what you have done,” he said.
In addition, Camacho considered that President Luis Abinader would have abandoned the merger project between the Ministry of Education (MINERD) and the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology (MESCYT), after the recent appointment of Rafael Santos as the governing entity of university education in the country.
During an interview on the program “Habla País”, hosted by journalists Ulises Jiménez and Julio Vargas and broadcast on Megavisión, channel 2, Camacho described the merger project, currently deposited in the National Congress, as an “eyesore” and “an offense to a historical achievement of Dominican society.”
“I want to believe that with that decision (the appointment of Santos) the President makes it clear that the merger project is not to be applied. It would not make sense to designate a new authority in the MESCYT if the intention was to eliminate that structure,” he expressed.
The legislator maintained that, in his opinion, there is no technical justification that supports the unification of both institutions and warned that the country requires, on the contrary, greater investment and strengthening at the technical, pre-university and higher levels.
“We do not see a single technical reason that guarantees that this merger will produce improvements in the Dominican educational system,” he stated.
Camacho also pointed out that insisting on the merger could be interpreted as an attempt to redirect the resources allocated to the 4% of GDP allocated to education, which, he said, would generate concern in broad sectors of society.
It is recalled that the Government explained that the merger project between the Ministry of Education of the Dominican Republic and the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology seeks to unify the management of pre-university and higher education in a single state entity, with the objective of optimizing resources, reducing administrative duplications and improving the articulation of educational policies at all levels.
PLD assures being strengthened for 2028
On the political level, the PLD leader assured that the PLD is strengthened with a view to the 2028 presidential elections and affirmed that this organization is not afraid of the candidates that the ruling Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) or the People’s Force party (FP) may present.
“We are not concerned about any candidate that the PRM may present. They know that the race is with us,” he said.
Camacho reiterated that the PLD will present its own candidacy in the next elections and ruled out, for the moment, strategic alliances. Likewise, he clarified that the political leader Gonzalo Castillo has not expressed his intention to participate in the internal contest to opt for the presidential candidacy of that organization.
