Querétaro, benchmark in energy demand for data centers

Querétaro, benchmark in energy demand for data centers

Queretaro, Qro. The installation of data centersof projects to be installed, will generate an energy demand of 350 megawatts for the state, a need for electrical power for which there is no precedent in another state of the country, said the Secretary of Sustainable Development (Sedesu) Marco Antonio del Prete Tercero.

Similarly, due to the interest of these projects in reaching Querétaro, it is the first time that a Mexican state stands out for the data center installationoutside of cities in the United States and Canada.

In the same sense, he explained that Querétaro is the state with the highest number of megawatts installed in Mexico, for the data center industry.

“For the first time in recent history, a state of Mexico stands out from the United States and Canada, a state of Mexico appears in the data centers. There are 350 megabytes already in the development portfolio that are going to be required in the coming years or months, there are no other states – at least that I am aware of – that have such a need for electrical power for computing load”, he explained.

At the moment, there are almost 20 data centers between those installed and those that are about to be installed in the state; Of these, 10 already have infrastructure and the rest are yet to be installed.

“Let’s remember that data centers are evaluated based on the megawatts they use for computing load, not so much for the flow of information but for the energy they require to keep running 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, that’s what I mean , today Querétaro appears as the epicenter, the cloud of Mexico, it is where most of the data centers are being installed”, he detailed.

Addressing the high energy demand of data centers is one of the objectives of the State Energy Agency that was formed this year, in order to study alternatives for energy supply, he added.

However, the state faces an energy deficit, for which local and federal authorities are studying supply solutions.

There is great interest from data centers to settle in the state, technology companies that are focused on the most important thing we have, which is data”, he said.

According to the head of Sedesu, among the projects that are about to be installed, they accumulate an investment of 1,400 million dollars for the development of their infrastructure.

In this context, he referred that the software industry participates with more than 4% of the state’s Gross Domestic Product, in addition to registering an average annual growth of 2.8 percent.

In addition, the manufacture of computer and communication equipment produced from January to June a value of 6,118 million pesos, an annual growth rate of 7 percent.
