The Qatar Fund for Development reported that the project aims to benefit more than 2.2 million people on the Island.
LIMA, Peru – The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) will receive some $4.5 million in grants from the Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD) that will be used to rehabilitate energy access in at least three Cuban provinces.
TO through X (formerly Twitter) the QFFD reported that the project aims to benefit more than 2.2 million people on the Island, with the initiative being especially concentrated in the territories of Havana, Artemisa and Mayabeque.
“The support will contribute to the recovery of essential public services, such as health centers, educational institutions and food production systems,” the publication states.
Likewise, Sheikh Thani bin Hamad Al Thani, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the QFFD, witnessed the signing ceremony, and the agreement was formalized by Mr. Fahad Hamad Al-Sulaiti, Director General, and Mr. Alexander De Croo, Administrator of the PNDU, within the framework of the Doha 2025 Forum.
The office of the United Nations Development Program thanked on social networks for being able to work together with the Qatar Fund in order to “facilitate access to energy for the basic activities of the Cuban population affected by hurricanes.”
Electricity outages exceed 20 hours a day in eastern provinces, while in Havana blackouts reach up to 10 hours a day. The lack of energy also influences the operation of other services such as water and health, which are of vital importance in the midst of the current epidemiological crisis on the Island.
The energy debaclewhich has been dragging on since mid-2024, is due to breakdowns in obsolete thermal power plants, scheduled maintenance, lack of fuel and lubricants, in addition to the paralysis of dozens of distributed generation engines and poor government management.
